Military
Daytime Russian drone swarm hits western Ukraine, knocking Ternopil offline and injuring 10. Hundreds of drones struck across Ukraine, with impacts reported in Ternopil, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, and Odesa oblasts.
Ukraine hits both Russia’s military and the infrastructure funding it – from a refinery in Perm to air defenses in occupied Donetsk. Strikes hit a Perm refinery, air defenses, and multiple ammunition and drone sites across occupied territories in a coordinated overnight operation.
Russia kept its “fifth-generation” Su-57 stealth fighter near the Urals — Ukrainian drones found it anyway. Drones struck Su-57 stealth jets and a Su-34 fighter-bomber at the Shagol airbase in Chelyabinsk Oblast, with satellite imagery confirming the damage.
Ukrainian drones 4–0 Tuapse oil: refinery ablaze again after fourth strike last night. Cleanup from the earlier strikes is still pulling fuel and contaminated soil from the ground. The 1 May attack lit up another section of Rosneft’s refinery/terminal complex.
Russians crawl through a gas pipeline from Sudzha for two weeks to attack Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast. Six Russian troops were killed on 29 April in the latest failed infiltration attempt on the Northern-Slobozhansky front, the military says.
Zaporizhzhia NPP loses external power — again. Fifteenth blackout since the full-scale invasion. A drone strike on Monday also killed one person in a workshop near the plant. Grossi called it “a stark reminder of the very real dangers” of military activity near nuclear facilities.
Intelligence and technology
Army reform in Ukraine to boost combat pay and reshape how troops are recruited and retained. The changes aim to link pay more closely to combat exposure and responsibility, with infantry and frontline roles receiving the largest increases.
“Octopus” interceptor goes to serial production: 8,000 units ordered to counter Russia’s Shahed strikes. The drones are backed by the UK and 29 domestic enterprises.
“AI makes it possible to automate parts of kill chain,” says Ukraine’s top defense AI official. Ukraine built its AI defense capability under fire, with no margin for slow procurement cycles or multi-year development timelines.
International
Post-Assad Syria still dependent on Russian oil despite shift to the West – Reuters. Russian shipments now cover most of Syria’s crude needs as domestic production remains far below demand and alternative suppliers have failed to fill the gap.
Finland already builds drones with a Ukrainian partner. Joining the drone coalition is the next step. The Latvia- and UK-led group already has more than 20 members; Finland wants in for both Ukraine’s frontline and its own defense industry.
Ukraine and Morocco open first direct road-transport, as trade turnover hits $280 million. “Business is ready, but the system was blocking the route for a long time,” explains Deputy Minister Serhii Derkach from the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development.
