Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Has Connection to Mckenna Grace’s Hunger Games Character

Mckenna Grace’s character in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping has ties to Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen.

It was recently announced that Grace, known for starring in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, will star in The Hunger Games: Sunrinse on the Reaping. Releasing in 2026, the movie is directed by Francis Lawrence and will also star Joseph Zada as Haymitch and Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird.

How is Katniss connected to Mckenna Grace’s Hunger Games character?

Grace will play a character named Maysilee Donner in the new Hunger Games prequel movie. In the book, Donner is Haymitch’s fellow District 12 tribute who is forced to compete in the deadly games.

Beyond both being from District 12, Donner is the original holder of the Mockingjay pin during the 50th Hunger Games. Katniss eventually becomes the owner of this pin, as she wore it during the 74th and 75th Hunger Games before it then became a symbol of rebellion against the Capitol.

Additionally, Deadline’s article regarding Grace’s casting describes Donner’s role in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping as “the closest thing to the Katniss role that Jennifer Lawrence made famous in the previous films.”

“Sunrise on the Reaping revisits the world of Panem twenty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell,” a description of Suzanne Collins’ novel, which was published last month and is what the new movie is based on, reads.

The screenplay for Sunrise on the Reaping comes from Billy Ray. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producing the movie, while Cameron MacConomy serves as the executive producer.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in United States theaters on November 20, 2026, from Lionsgate.
