One dead, four injured in head-on crash with wrong-way driver in Orange

ORANGE, Conn. (WTNH) — One driver is dead and multiple people are with serious injuries after a head-on crash with a wrong-way driver occurred early Sunday morning in Orange, police said.

Moments after 1:30 a.m., a witness reported to police that a Honda Civic was driving west on the eastbound roadway on Route 34 near the Merritt Parkway interchange. Shortly after, the witness then reported the Honda had collided head-on with a BMW near the intersection of Baldwin Road.

Once at the scene, rescuers had to extricate the sole occupant of the Honda, who later died of his injuries at Yale New Haven Hospital, police said.

Four occupants were seated in the BMW, and police say they all sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. All four are being treated at Yale New Haven Hospital.

The crash site was closed for nearly three hours as investigators processed the scene, and the area reopened at around 5:00 a.m.

The identity of the deceased will not be released at this time, and the crash remains under investigation.
