Passing showers today, Helene set to make landfall in Florida tonight
The umbrellas will be up and down today. Expect cloudy skies with passing showers. There could be some pockets of heavy rain at times. The clouds will stick around overnight along with the chance of a couple of showers. Friday looks mostly dry, but it will be tough to shake the clouds. Unfortunately, some pesky clouds will stick around through the weekend. Optimistically, we could see some peeks of sun.
Helene is a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds around 105 MPH. Helene is still expected to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane before making landfall between Apalachicola and Cedar Key later this evening–most likely after 9 PM. The biggest threat to life and property will be storm surge. The National Hurricane Center is predicting storm surge of 15 to 20 FEET along the Big Bend. Strong impacts are likely farther inland–through Georgia into the Carolinas.
