Berlin using $350K grant to remove contaminated soil so apartments can be built
BERLIN, Conn. (WTNH) — The Town of Berlin will use a $350,000 grant to remediate contaminated soil on a 1.5-acre property, making way for 50 residential units to be built on the space.
Similar projects have been underway in Ansonia, Norwich and Waterbury.
The grant comes from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development.
The Brownfield Remediation Project will ready the area for mixed-income units.
“This was a manufacturer operating for a number of years,” Chris Edge, director of the state department of economic and community development, said. “They had used cutting oils and other things which ended up seeping into the soil.”
Work will begin in two weeks. The apartments will be ready for people to move in next summer.
