Knives Out 3’s Rian Johnson Details Next Movie After Wake Up Dead Man

Director Rian Johnson already knows what his next project will be after Knives Out 3.

Knives Out 3, also known as Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, held its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, where it received overwhelmingly positive reviews. The sequel film is now scheduled to be released in select theaters on November 26 before it makes its way to the Netflix streaming platform on December 12.

What did Rian Johnson say about his next movie about Knives Out 3?

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Johnson revealed that the next movie he makes after Wake Up Dead Man won’t be another Knives Out adventure. Rather, he’s planning to shift gears and tackle a completely different genre.

“The most exciting thing right now is this idea I have in my head for the next thing I’m gonna make, and I think ultimately, that’s all you can do, is just kind of follow your nose,” Johnson said. “If I had to define it genre-wise, I’d say it harkens back to the ’70s paranoid thrillers. It’s got a light sci-fi element to it.”

While Johnson says he’s “very, very happy” partnering with Netflix for the Knives Out movies, his next movie may not be released through them, as he’s seemingly looking for the film to have a larger theatrical presence.

“I’ve said that the theatrical experience is very, very important to me,” he explained. “It’s something I really believe in, and I feel like the reports of its death are greatly exaggerated. We see that this year, with movies like Sinners – something genuinely exciting by one of our great new filmmakers, connecting with audiences in a huge way, and in a way where people want to get out to the theatre to see it. That’s really exciting to me.”

Further details about Johnson’s next project after Knives Out 3 are being kept under wraps at this time.
