Benny Safdie Explains Split From Brother Josh for The Smashing Machine & Marty Supreme

Benny and Josh Safdie are both set to release their own directorial efforts this year. In a recent interview, Benny explained why the brothers decided to work apart from one another after delivering two movies as a team.

Why did the Safdie’s split up for their next movies?

In a recent interview with Empire, Benny Safdie — who directed the upcoming The Smashing Machine — was asked about his brother, Josh. The duo directed both the 2017 thriller Good Time, as well as the breakout hit Uncut Gems. This time, though, the pair are working separately. While Benny has The Smashing Machine coming out, Josh is working on Marty Supreme, which also releases this year.

According to Benny, the decision to do it is simply because they were both interested in different things.

“We had started out making movies separately, in college,” Safdie said. “And then we were always working towards something, and when we reached that place it was almost like, ‘Oh, well, what now?’ Then it was like, ‘I’m interested in this,’ and, ‘I’m interested in this,’ and then you want to figure that out. It just felt like a continuation of a process.”

Although reports that the pair had a falling out surfaced throughout the year, Safdie doesn’t mention any tumultuous issues between the pair. Instead, it seems more that they simply wished to explore different avenues in their next films.
