Prominent New Haven criminal defense lawyer dies

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Hugh Keefe, the man who spent decades as one of New Haven’s most prominent criminal defense lawyers, died Friday at age 82, according to a social media post by his wife, Connecticut Superior Court Judge Tara Knight.
Keefe rose to legal prominence in Connecticut in the late 1960s, when he defended and freed two members of the Black Panthers in New Haven.
He went on to defend clients in several high-profile cases, including the 2002 Beth Carpenter murder-for-hire trial and the 2006 James Galante trash hauler racketeering trial.
Keefe was a law professor at Yale Law School for more than 30 years and was inducted as a fellow into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1984.
