Disney’s Live-Action Tangled Remake Pauses Development, Movie’s Future Unknown

Disney’s live-action Tangled remake is being put on pause.
It was announced in December 2024 that 2010’s Tangled was getting a live-action remake at Disney. The Greatest Showman and Better Man’s Michael Gracey was tapped to direct the movie, with a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
What’s happening with Disney’s live-action Tangled remake?
While the “project had been in active development,” a new report from The Hollywood Reporter says the movie is now being put on pause.
“It remains uncertain whether Tangled will move forward down the road or undergo a creative rethink,” the article notes.
Reasons why Disney is pausing development on the live-action Tangled remake are unclear at this time; although, it is worth noting that the most recent Disney live-action remake, Snow White, wasn’t a massive hit at the box office, as it’s so far only made around $145.7 million at the global box office. There have been differing reports regarding the film’s budget, with The Hollywood Reporter’s number citing it at $270 million.
The future of Disney’s live-action remakes could be dependent on how big of a splash Lilo & Stitch makes at the box office when it opens nationwide on May 23, 2025. Universal Pictures, meanwhile, is also now getting in the live-action remake game, as they’ll be releasing How to Train Your Dragon this June and just recently announced that a sequel to that movie will arrive in 2027.
The original, animated Tangled movie was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. The voice cast includes Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider, and Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel.
“When the kingdom’s most wanted bandit is taken hostage by Rapunzel — a teen with 70 feet of golden hair who’s looking to escape the tower where she’s been locked away for years — the unlikely duo sets off on a hair-raising escapade,” the synopsis for the film reads.
