How Trump's tariffs on Canada could impact Connecticut gas prices

CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — President Donald Trump’s 10% tariff on Canadian oil went into effect on Tuesday. You’re probably wondering how this will affect gas prices.

Consumers can expect to see the effects of the recent tariffs depending on the region.

The northeast, which includes Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Upstate New York, will see the price increase first and most significantly, according to Gas Buddy.

A significant portion of the region’s fuel comes from the Irving Oil Refinery in Canada. By mid-March, fuel prices could rise 20 to 40 cents per gallon, Gas Buddy said.

According to Gas Buddy, a 15-gallon fill-up could cost an additional $3 to $6.

The price increase includes diesel and other petroleum products.

The Midwest and other areas can expect a couple of weeks before prices climb, Gas Buddy said.
