Ethan Hawke Reacts to Maya’s Claim of Casting Actors Based on Instagram Followers

Ethan Hawke has come out to share his thoughts on his daughter Maya Hawke’s recent comments regarding the recent trend of casting influencers in movies based on their Instagram follower count. While the actress labeled the practice as confusing, her father seems to harbor a more decisive opinion on the same.

So, here’s what the Daytime Emmy Award recipient had to say about his daughter’s claims.

What did Ethan Hawke say about Maya’s claims?

While talking to the press at the Berlin Film Festival, the Moon Knight star talked about Maya’s statements about producers wanting to recruit actors with a high Instagram follower count, terming the phenomenon as “crazy.”

Expressing his disbelief over the strange casting criteria, Ethan Hawke stated, “Sometimes I’ll be setting a movie up and someone will say, ‘Oh, you should cast Suzie.’ I’m like, ‘Who is she?’ ‘She has 10 million followers.’ I’m like, ‘OK cool, has she acted before?’ ‘No, but…’ And you’re like, ‘Wow, so this is going to help me get the movie made? This is crazy,’” as per Variety.

The Before trilogy actor then doubled down on the apparent absurdity of the process, noting, “So if I don’t have this public-facing [platform], I don’t have a career? And if I get more followers I might get that part? What?”

Resonating with Maya’s views on the topic, Hawke then explained that legendary artists like Robert De Niro secure movie roles because of their talents, as opposed to many modern-day actors who “think being an actor is protein shakes and going to the gym.”

Ethan Hawke’s comments come after Maya Hawke opened up about producers wanting to cast social media personalities based on their Instagram reach. During her recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she addressed the same with Josh Horowitz.

The Stranger Things star stated, “I don’t care about Instagram. Instagram sucks.” Talking about how popular Instagram influencers with a significant amount of followers can receive funding for movies, the actress remarked, “It’s a really confusing line to walk.”
