‘The Piña Colada Song’ Is Being Turned into a Movie, First Details Revealed
In a surprising announcement, Deadline is reporting that Alloy Entertainment and musical artist Rupert Holmes are partnering together to turn his 1979 hit “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” into a movie.
What will The Piña Colada Song movie be about?
According to Deadline’s report, the movie’s premise is being kept mostly under wraps as of now, but is described as a romantic comedy film. The movie is currently looking for writers and will be produced by Alloy’s President and Chief Creative Officer Leslie Morgenstein and EVP of Film Elysa Koplovitz Dutton. Holmes will also serve as an executive producer on the movie.
“Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” was originally released on Holmes’ 1979 studio album Partners in Crime. The song quickly rose in popularity and became the final number-one song of the 1970s in the U.S. The song, famous for its chorus, tells the story of a man who is bored with his relationship and, while reading the paper, spots an ad about a woman seeking a man.
Since its release, the song has remained famous for the past four decades, appearing in countless films, television shows, and more.
Holmes originally began his musical career in the 1960s and has released nine studio albums. The British-American artist also is known for his musicals The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which won two Tony Awards, as well as Curtains. Holmes also developed a comedy-drama TV series, Remember WENN, for AMC in 1966, as well as wrote the 2023 novel Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide.
