West Hartford elementary students make 'red wagon trek' to help food bank
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — In West Hartford, young students with Morley Elementary School are marking a major milestone when it comes to collecting food donations for the town’s food pantry.
For 30 years straight, students in Kindergarten through Grade 2 have trekked over a mile with red wagons filled with non-perishable foods to the town hall.
“My favorite part about today was making people happy that don’t have enough food, or money to buy food,” second-grader Hadley said.
“It’s so important for them to learn to give back to their community,” parent Liz Kushman said during Thursday’s event.
The goal of the initiative is to stock up the town’s food pantry.
“It’s community helping and supporting community,” Mayor Shari Cantor said. “My son did this 30 years ago, this is his daughter,” she said, pointing to her granddaughter. “She loves her little red wagon.”
Last year, the food pantry donated 10,000 bags of food to over 700 families in need.
“It’s unfortunate to be honest, but it’s great that we have programs like that can help,” said Tullulah Pickens, the food pantry’s program coordinator.
According to staff, items most in need are cold cereal, rice, shelf-stable milk, pasta and sauce, tuna, canned ravioli, baked beans, canned fruit, canned vegetables, soup, and peanut butter.
The town said community members can also always drop off donations in the town hall lobby Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
