Fire Prevention Week: New Haven residents can get free smoke alarms

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — It is National Fire Prevention Week, and on Friday, New Haven officials reminded residents that they can get smoke alarms for free.

“Frankly, we’ve had some tragedies in recent years that oftentimes could be prevented by more attention to fire safety,” Mayor Justin Elicker said.

One of those tragedies happened on Sunday.

“Earlier this week on Sunday, we lost a member of our community,” the mayor said. “Kenneth Mims from a fire on 516 Elm St. In addition, there were 10 people in the building at the time, 9 people have been displaced.”

In 2024 alone, nearly 150 fires have occurred in New Haven, resulting in one fatality, 14 injuries, and the temporary displacement of 126 residents.

New Haven Fire Chief John Alston reminded people that fire safety is “everyone’s responsibility.”

“The best fire safety that there is is not to have fires start in the first place, and when they do, have the tools, resources, education and the knowledge to get out,” he said.

In addition to having smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors for every sleeping room, the New Haven Fire Department recommends establishing a designated area to keep you, your family, and your home safe.

“I’ve been talking to residents about coming up with a designated area where you all could meet outside with your family and loved ones if there was an emergency,” fire inspector investigator Michael Proto said. “It’s important to check your smoke and CO detectors. Make sure you check them monthly and change the batteries whenever you change the clocks. That’s twice a year.”

If you need to update your smoke alarms, the city has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide free alarms and installations to New Haven residents.

“I urge everyone to make an appointment for a free smoke alarm installation,” Jasmin Franjul with the American Red Cross said. “It’s a small act that can make a huge difference.”
