What is American Homeboy about?
“American Homeboy is a documentary film that explores the complex origins of pachuco and cholo culture which sprouted from American soil more than 100 years ago in response to wartime sentiment, social alienation, and government discrimination only to become a pop culture phenomenon,” the synopsis reads. “The film draws from rare interviews shot on 5k with leading Mexican American historians, academics, artists, activists, cholos, and former law enforcement officers against a backdrop of 50 hours of restored archival footage.”
The cast of the movie, which was filmed over the span of three years, includes Estevan Oriol (L.A. Originals), Luis J. Rodriguez (Always Running), Charley Trujillo (Soldados In Vietnam), David ‘Compton’ Oropeza (Tattoo Nation), John Ulloa (Low Creations C.C.), Eduardo Obregón Pagán (Murder at the Sleepy Lagoon), James Diego Vigil (From Indians To Chicanos), Denise Sandoval (The Art Of Riding Low), Kenneth Castillo (Counterpunch), Richard Valdemar (Gangland), Sandy Avila (Lady Lowriders C.C.), Chuco Moreno (Viceland), Jose Valle (Raza del Soul), Jose ‘Barrio Archaeologist’ Joaquin, Jerry Ramirez (This Fool), and more.
Chela Media, a West Coast-based Latino digital media startup, produced American Homeboy. Maxwell and Patrick Bowers also serve as producers and executive producers.
“Chicano culture is unique, beautiful, and complex,” Maxwell said in a statement. “My goal is to help contextualize it for average people by utilizing modern technology and carefully piecing together the past.”
American Homeboy will be available on digital services such as Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, and more on October 15, 2024, from Freestyle Digital Media.
